In order to choose flooring that will work for your needs and your budget you must take several things into consideration. First and foremost is the space that you are choosing to cover; different rooms have different needs when it comes to flooring. While hardwood may offer more visual impact in larger common rooms it may not be a material that will work in a bathroom that is exposed to moisture or a family room where your children like to lay on the floor and watch television.
The final question to answer is how much of the work do you plan to do yourself? This depends wholly on your skills interest available time and budget. However when hiring contractors or subcontractors get at least three bids for each item and be very specific in what you request. If you hire a general contractor check for bank references and to see whether the contractor is bonded. If you build with helpers you will need to have builders' risk and workers' compensation insurance (and make sure that any subcontractors have workman's comp as well).
